GTA 6 Mechanics

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 & Xbox Series X|S. These eight explainers collect what Rockstar has shown or said about how the game will play — wanted heat, the phone, console frame rate, story length, and the systems around them. Each page keeps official footage, developer comments, and press previews separate from what is still unknown.

Explainers × 8 Pre-launch

The questions people ask first

Frame rate, story length, police, and the phone

Will it run at 30 FPS?

The strongest public evidence is a Rockstar North report that current console builds run at 30 FPS. That is more concrete than guessing from trailer smoothness, and it is not a published launch spec sheet. No 60 FPS mode has been announced.

30 FPS and performance modes

Is the story 80 hours?

Rob Nelson’s February playthrough lasted about 80 hours and mixed the main story with optional objectives. Rockstar has not announced a campaign length, so “80-hour story” overstates one developer run.

What the 80 hours includes

How does the wanted level work?

The Extended Look shows a six-slot meter. Preview reporting describes police that remember faces, clothes, and vehicles. Star-by-star responses and how a stored description clears are still unpublished.

What can the phone do?

Footage shows the phone as an object in Jason or Lucia’s hand. Preview reporting adds calls to the other protagonist, social browsing, and a vehicle scan before a theft. There is no final app list yet.

Console Performance

Story Length

How Long Is GTA 6?

The most defensible number is about 80 hours for one Rockstar North playthrough that mixed the main story with optional goals carrying narrative consequences.

Wanted System

GTA 6 Wanted System

GTA 6 restores a six-star ceiling and makes escaping depend on what police know about you, your clothes, and your vehicle—not only whether you leave a flashing search radius.

Phone System

GTA 6 Phone System

GTA 6 makes the phone a physical part of play. Preview reporting describes social feeds, vehicle scanning, and calling the other protagonist, while the official footage shows it used naturally during missions.

Character Switching

GTA 6 Character Switching

Jason and Lucia can operate independently or together. When they share a scene, control can switch immediately while the other protagonist continues under AI control.

Criminal Profile

GTA 6 Criminal Profile

Criminal Profile is a long-term behavior system separate from the wanted level. Rockstar says repeated choices can change how Leonida reacts to Jason and Lucia and how parts of their story play out, without defining one “correct” way to play.

Driving Physics

GTA 6 Driving Physics & Car Handling

Rockstar says GTA 6 deliberately blends the weight and feel of GTA IV with GTA V’s accessibility. Its rebuilt handling model applies drivetrain, tires, suspension, and steering, but nobody outside Rockstar has published hands-on driving impressions.

Gym & Body System

GTA 6 Gym & Body System

Jason and Lucia can work out, and their bodies respond to eating, exercise, and sleep. The system is confirmed; the exact stats, penalties, and training loop are not.

Nothing here is a hands-on review

Every explainer uses the same three labels. Official showcase means the Extended Look or another Rockstar video. Developer interview means a named Rockstar comment, usually Rob Nelson. Press preview means sanctioned reporting from people Rockstar invited — useful, and still second-hand.

Until November 19, 2026, none of these pages can describe the shipping build. They answer what has been shown, and they stop where Rockstar has not published a rule.

Mechanics FAQ

Will GTA 6 run at 30 or 60 FPS?

Current console development builds are reported at 30 FPS, attributed to Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson. No 60 FPS performance mode has been announced, and Rockstar has not published a final mode table for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S.

How long is the GTA 6 story?

Rockstar has not announced a fixed campaign length. About 80 hours was one Rob Nelson playthrough that included the main story and some optional objectives. It is not an official main-story-only estimate.

What does the GTA 6 phone do?

Official footage shows the phone used as an in-world object. Preview reporting describes calls and texts, social browsing, a vehicle-scanning tool, and asking Jason or Lucia to join. Rockstar has not published a final app list.

Does GTA 6 bring back six wanted stars?

Yes. The August 27 Extended Look shows a six-slot wanted meter. Preview reporting says police can build descriptions around faces, clothing, and vehicles. Exact responses at each star are not public yet.
