Freight Train

The locomotive’s principal real-world model is the EMD GP38-2, specifically a four-axle road switcher. Its cab interior instead draws from the GE AC4400CW. The sloped nose takes cues from wide-nose safety cabs introduced on GE’s Dash 8 locomotives and later designs, although this nose is narrower than the frame beneath it.

Its long hood combines several influences: the rear portion drops lower in a humpback arrangement resembling the GP30, SD70MAC, and later related locomotives. A two-chime horn is fitted, but its sound uses the three-note chord associated with Leslie S3L/RS3L horns. The interior includes a General Electric 12R Series II radio and GE-branded control-stand microphones.

The GTA VI material documents the exterior locomotive seen in official imagery, but does not confirm that the cab, drivability, train consists, operators, mission use, or special variants from GTA V and GTA Online return in the newer game. No trailer timestamp or additional promotional appearance is identified.

The GTA VI unit’s visible engine-compartment lettering includes “Trax.” The Boxtrax markings and its paint arrangement distinguish that observed locomotive from the worn Go Loco Railroad engine documented in GTA V and GTA Online.

In GTA V and GTA Online, Go Loco Railroad operates the Freight Train across San Andreas. That version carries Go Loco logos, while the cab’s rear-right access door also bears Santos Steamer branding. Markings above the cab read “LS” and “2004”; together, LS2004 references Los Santos and the 2004 release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

The earlier locomotive has a weathered, rusty finish rather than selectable paint. White covers much of the rear body, sections of the nose, side rails, front ladders, and roof details. Yellow occupies most of the body and the rails at either end, while black pearlescent colouring determines the striping. Its chassis has long couplers, substantial end protection, twin-axle bogies, perimeter handrails, and steps at both ends.

The GTA V-era cab is modelled with seats, controls, displays, and stickers, but is ordinarily inaccessible. During Derailed, Trevor enters through the rear-right door, removes the engineer, and briefly controls speed and the horn before the viewpoint is locked to first person and control shifts to Michael.

In normal free roam, the locomotive and its freight cars cannot be destroyed and continue through track obstructions or explosions. Unlike the Tram, it does not halt for blocked rails. It can instantly kill characters struck head-on, apart from Trevor while his special ability is active. Players can stand on a moving train, unlike in GTA IV, though falling from the locomotive or cars remains possible. Its engine audio is especially quiet and is most audible while stopped at Palmer-Taylor Power Station, where truck-derived brake sounds can also be heard.

Scripted trains differ from the regular indestructible service. If their driver is absent or killed, explosives or a Minigun can stop them; destroying the locomotive alone disables the entire train. Individual freight cars can also be destroyed without separating from a moving consist. Even scripted trains cannot derail outside Derailed.

Freight consists in GTA V and Online use changing mixes of empty, Lando, and D-Rail well cars, boxcars, and tanker cars. Derailed uses a train hauling 40 Lando well cars, implied to be owned or leased by Merryweather Security. Merryweather is likewise linked to a red-and-black locomotive in The E.C.U Job, while Eberhard Munitions is associated with the unit used during The Titan Job. In GTA Online, the regular Freight Train briefly stops at Palmer-Taylor Power Station.
