The Penumbra is a two-door sports coupe from Maibatsu that previously featured in GTA V and GTA Online and is due to appear in Grand Theft Auto VI. A silver example was spotted parked at a Crosstown intersection in the first trailer, and the car also surfaced briefly in the September 2022 GTA VI leaks.
Trailer and leak footage
The first GTA VI trailer shows the Penumbra at 0:45. It is positioned next to a purple Bravado Gauntlet Hellfire. Separate September 2022 leak footage briefly shows a blue Penumbra passing Jason, although a world-events interface partly blocks the view.

Eclipse-based bodywork
The Penumbra chiefly draws on the fourth-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse, particularly the facelifted Eclipse GT. Its darkened front treatment reflects that influence. The name follows the same eclipse theme: a penumbra is the partial-shadow region associated with an eclipse.
Its front bumper, hood, grille pattern, and door handles take cues from the first-generation Scion tC. The headlamp shapes resemble those of the 2013–2016 Dodge Dart, while their arrangement recalls the pre-facelift sixth-generation Ford Fiesta. At the rear, the car closely follows the 2006–2014 Audi TT.
GTA V debut and class
Before its GTA VI appearance, the Maibatsu Penumbra appeared as a two-door sport compact in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. It is assigned to the Sports class in both games. In GTA V traffic, it can appear around Alta, Vinewood, and Rockford Hills, and it may also be found outside Grove Street Garage when a game is loaded.
Grand Theft Auto Online added the car for sale through Southern San Andreas Super Autos in The High Life Update, priced at $24,000. It was later taken off that site in the enhanced editions during the San Andreas Mercenaries update. Rockstar’s in-game dealership description called the model recently discontinued, echoing the real Eclipse’s 2012 discontinuation.
After Hours customization
The After Hours update gave the Online Penumbra livery options that story mode does not have. One is called “Almost Had You,” a reference to Brian’s car and dialogue from The Fast and the Furious. The same update removed the black Maibatsu script formerly printed low on the rear bumper, apparently because it conflicted with the new liveries.
Body colour covers the main panels and cabin stitching. A second colour controls the lower body areas, the middle of the front bumper, mirrors, door handles, and roof section. Its standard wheels match the Uzer Sport rims available at Los Santos Customs, themselves resembling RAYS Volk Racing CE28N wheels. The cabin is shared with the Feltzer and Bullet, apart from a Maibatsu badge on the steering-wheel horn pad.
Handling and special cars
In GTA V and Online, the Penumbra has a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, unlike the front-wheel-drive arrangement of the Eclipse GT and SE that influenced it. It is described as looking like a V8-powered vehicle, despite a claimed 2.6-litre turbo engine. Its engine audio is also used by the Jackal and the modern Police Cruiser.
Its acceleration and braking are comparatively weak, but its steering response is described as sharp across speeds. Standard top speed is likened to the Sentinel’s, while modified examples can approach the Fusilade. A headlight issue offsets the inner corona on the right side from the physical lamp, especially visibly at night.
Hao owns an extensively modified orange Penumbra, first encountered during Shift Work and later displayed at the LS Car Meet in GTA Online with the Hard Parking livery, custom wheels, and plate 60HSW264. A Vagos driver uses a metallic racing-blue example in Repossession; its traffic colour selection can produce the otherwise unavailable Utility Sea Foam Blue pearlescent finish.
